Case ManagementCrisis Intervention and De-escalation Training

This interactive virtual workshop will cover techniques for de-escalating complex client encounters, incidents, and crises. We will cover developing both interpersonal skills – practical techniques and exercises to best work with our clients when they aren’t “at their best.” This training will also include agency and systems level considerations, crafting and implementing agency policies and procedures which support both staff and clients in these situations. Together, we will explore the balancing act that is the marriage of theory and practice, maintaining ethical and professional boundaries, exercising self-awareness and emotional intelligence, and implementing a trauma-informed, client-centered, and harm reduction framework. We will cover triaging complex and often-contradictory needs, when to refer out to higher levels of care, and considerations about when client discharge is necessary.

Participants are encouraged to bring real-world examples of complex client engagement that they wish to debrief and reflect upon as a touchpoint for presented theories and techniques.

Trainer: Evan Serio- Program Manager, Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Inc.

Case ManagementProblem Gambling Training

There has been a dramatic shift in the past 10 years in both the substance use and mental health fields. Not only are providers recognizing the importance of integrating treatment for multiple substances (e.g. alcohol, drug and tobacco use) but also the need to include mental health disorders into clinical formulations. However, the screening, assessment and treatment of gambling disorder often falls through the cracks, even in well-developed co-occurring disorder enhanced programs. This training will focus on how integration of services can be developed in other behavioral health settings as well as prevention programs. This training will also cover how people experiencing homelessness, underserved communities, and people with a co-occurring disorder are at a greater risk level for problem gambling. Participants will be encouraged to adapt select philosophies and treatment interventions into their own programs. This training is relevant to both treatment and prevention, and will include lecture, group discussion, and learning tasks.

At the conclusion of the training participants will be able to:

– List a minimum of two (2) reasons it is important to include gambling awareness into practice in treatment and prevention programs
– Identify subpopulations at a greater risk level for problem gambling
– Identify three (3) ways to integrate gambling within an assessment
– Describe a treatment intervention to assist clients working through a gambling disorder

This training offers support to supervisors and emerging leaders as we are all encouraged to engage in deeper conversations to restore relationships around equity and inclusion in our communities. In this training we will review restorative justice principles and discuss how they can be applied to our homeless response system. We will review diversity, equity, and inclusion assessment tools that can be used to assist with evaluating how an organization is doing to support a positive work culture and maintain positive relationships with staff and those that receive services. We will discuss how to interrupt negative patterns of engagement that retraumatizes communities and will provide guidance on how to conduct problem solving conversations that will support a healthy culture and increase positive relationships in communities.

The Data Outliers Report will also be used as the data source for a dashboard that will show CT HMIS data outliers on a quarterly basis. The purpose of the report and dashboard together is to provide information to users, programs, and leadership on the status of various data elements in HMIS with the end goal of ensuring continuous review of CT HMIS data. CCEH will be publishing a new dashboard the first week of August, please join us for a review of the dashboard on 8/2 ahead of its launch.

DataHow Vulnerable is the Homeless Population to COVID-19? Results from a National Study

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), recently completed analysis of electronic health records (EHR) for individuals with indications of a history of homelessness. Using EHR data, the research describes the prevalence rates of chronic health conditions among more than 50,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. The project found that people experiencing homelessness have significantly greater prevalence of major chronic health conditions compared to the general population. This webinar will include findings on the health care conditions as well as health services utilization among people experiencing homelessness, including:
-Prevalence of chronic health conditions associated with higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19
-Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) utilization and other co-occurring behavioral health conditions among individuals with opioid use disorder who are experiencing homelessness

Housing StrategyComponents of an Effective Outreach System

Outreach plays a vital role in ending homelessness because it helps to bring clients into the homeless system that may not normally enter the homeless system. With the pandemic that we are currently going through it is more important than ever to engage people experiencing homelessness who may be disconnected and alienated not only from mainstream services and supports, but from the services targeting homeless persons as well. This webinar is the first of a series that will focus on the different components that make up an effective outreach system. During this webinar we will cover the conceptual framework of outreach, record keeping and data, outreach during COVID-19, and how to have an assertive, trauma-informed, equitable approach to outreach.

Race EquityAddressing Racialized Trauma and Actively Engaging in Anti-Racism

Racism permeates every institution and is a key issue that must be addressed within the homeless response system. Many of the people we work with who are experiencing homelessness as well as our fellow colleagues have racialized experiences that impact their everyday lives. As we work to ensure our programs and services are trauma informed, we must also consider racialized trauma and develop strategies and a system of support to address it. This webinar will discuss how to be active participants in anti-racist practices and begin a discussion on navigating and addressing racialized trauma. Joining us for this webinar are national, statewide, and local change makers who are leading efforts to end homelessness while centering race equity.
