The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is an annual one-day unduplicated count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals and families across the United States. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that each state only report those who have been verified to be unsheltered on the night of the PIT, which was Tuesday, January 26, 2021. The Connecticut PIT Count has historically involved sending volunteers out to pre-assigned areas on the night of the count to complete surveys with anyone experiencing unsheltered homelessness that evening or early the following morning. Due to COVID-19, we were able to pivot the methodology and instead leverage the data in our statewide homeless management information system (HMIS) entered by professional outreach staff who work with this population on a year-round basis.
